I felt very stuck. My band Dovekins had been broken up for several months. My other friends band was blowing up on a massive level. I was just grappling with a feeling of complete artistic impotence and loss of direction. Feeling the weight of my music stagnating under so much self imposed pressure, I decided to take an opportunity to do a residency in Fairfield, Iowa. My friend Taylor was curating this amazing program so I teamed up with my friend-genius, Nate Wheeler, and we moved all our gear there for a month.
It was my goal to learn how to use Ableton and break the inertia towards a new direction. This was the song that did it!
I dyed my hair, didn't drink, worked in a 100 degree studio studio with black mold and cockroaches, and birthed my new alter ego... P. Hotchi.
The residency was one of the most important months of my life. I was coming to terms with my ambitions but also the deep-seated insecurities that taunted me if I attempted to take a step towards them.
The song specifically was written about finding the song I was writing; a song about writing a song. :)
